San Francisco based startup SkyCatch has announced plans to bring the 'sharing economy' ethos to the world of drones.

A new service called Workmode will allow companies to locate and hire drone pilots for filming, mapping and surveying.

The goal of the service is to make it easier for companies to use the expensive technology, while at the same time allowing pilots to make money from their skill.

SkyCatch's Ambar Pansari said: "A lot of time customers try to do this themselves first. They buy a Phantom drone, they go out and try it, and the first time out the drone crashes. And then they come to us and say, 'This was a lot harder than we thought.'"

Anyone can sign-up to be a pilot on Workmode, but only operators who pass a two stage test become 'verified' pilots. This allows companies to have confidence in who they're hiring.

The service is scheduled to launch in France next month, but SkyCatch still need to iron out legal grey areas concerning the use of drones in public places.
